African PH Grade

About 5 years ago I started playing with the Marlin Guide Guns during my extended safari hunting seasons to Africa, mostly Mozambique and Zambia where I own a couple of hunting concessions. The first Marlin I bought was a 1895 GBL with the 18.5 inch barrel, it was one of the newer models which the Marlin regulars call a Remlin. I also decided to start loading my own bullets for this caliber and during the course of my hunting season very quickly reached the conclusion that the Marlin Guide Gun was a formidable caliber that would suit an all round carrying weapon in the field in Africa.

This led me to look at the various ways a standard “OFF THE SHELF” 1895 guide gun can can be tweaked and tuned to handle the rigors of a hard season in a professional hunters armory and I wrote a related article on this site called ‘Africanizing the 45/70 Guide Gun’ where I explained the various options and enhancements available to the layman or DIY rifleman.

The end result is a Guide Gun that is not fancy, it does not have gold inlay or a famous name. However for the African field it is reliable and ready to go and has been field tested on Elephant, Buffalo, Hippo and more.
